FRIENDS OF LOS ALAMOS PRIDE NEWS RELEASE
The Friends of Los Alamos Pride announces the following upcoming events for June 9–17. Come join us and show your support for our LGBTQ+ loved ones, friends, and neighbors at these fun and diverse activities in Los Alamos.
If you’re thinking to yourself, “Oh, I’d like to go but I don’t have a thing to wear,” then you need to visit https://www.bonfire.com/los-alamos-pride-2024/ to see the selection of t-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, and swag that can brighten your day and adorn your bod for a stylish appearance at any of the LA Pride events.
Sunday, June 9, Pride Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Los Alamos, 1738 N. Sage Street. “What Pride Means to Me”
Sunday, June 9, Intergenerational Game Night from 5–9 p.m. at the Los Alamos Teen Center, 475 20th Street, Suite C. The Teen Center will host an intergenerational game night that is open to all ages. Expect board games, card games like Magic the Gathering, big screen video gaming, snacks and more. Previous events have included participants from elementary school age to folks old enough to remember when checkers was a thing. Youth under 12 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Monday, June 10, Tie Dye Event, 12-3 p.m. on the lawn at the Los Alamos Teen Center. Come join the fun and add some color to your wardrobe at this family friendly tie dye event brought to you by the Teen Center’s Youth Mobilizers, a JJAB-supported youth leadership program. The organizers will have shirts to tie dye and assistants on hand to help you dip and dye your way to a pop of color for your summer wardrobe! The shirts are first come, first served — or you can bring your own clothing item to dye! This event is designed for anyone to participate but children under 10 will want to be accompanied by an adult to provide extra support in this creative but admittedly messy process. The event will be outdoors so don’t forget to wear your sunscreen and come wearing clothes you can make art in!
Tuesday, June 11, Pride Flag Parade, 5 p.m. at Ashley Pond. From organizer George Marsden: “Folks will gather near the stage at 5 p.m. for an informal march around Ashley Pond while carrying flags that represent the great variety of folks in the LGBTQ+ community. Bring your own flag, or borrow one of ours as we celebrate the lives and contributions of everyone. Fly your flag proudly or carry one to support your queer friends and family. Last year, the turn out was so great that it took close to 2 minutes before all the marchers passed the stage for a second time. We would love to break that number this year as you make your voices heard!”
Tuesday, June 11, Tuesdays @ the Square Concert, 6 pm at the Central Park Lawn Square (next to Boese Bros.). Keep on marching from Ashley Pond to the Central Park Square for a concert by Candace Vargas and Northern 505.
Wednesday, June 12, picnic and painting, 4-6:30 p.m. at the tunnel underpass for the Canyon Rim Trail eastern trailhead. For the third year Friends of LA Pride invite all interested participants to the Pride Mural Paint Event in the Los Alamos Community Art Tunnel. Participants are invited to help make some pride-fun art (expect a lot of rainbows). All supplies will be provided: paint, brushes, and clean up station. Bring a nosh and enjoy picnicking while watching the art being created. Prepared food is available at the Los Alamos Coop deli, adjacent to the tunnel area.
Thursday, June 13, Pride on the Patio, 6-8 pm at Pig+Fig Cafe, 11 Sherwood Blvd. in White Rock. Come for casual socializing and Pride-themed drinks at what has become an annual tradition for Pride Week. Pig+Fig owner Laura Crucet says, “It’s important for me to support and make all parts of the community comfortable. I want everyone to feel welcome here.” Pig*Fig will offer complimentary appetizers and the restaurant will be open for those who want to purchase dinner.
Friday, June 14, Pride Festival, 3-7 pm Central Park Square. This is it, the big event, the climax, one might say, but in an entirely family friendly way. Entertainment, informational booths, fun activities and giveaways, good vibes galore, and a host of people gathered to celebrate acceptance, appreciation, and pride in who we are collectively and individually.
Monday, June 17, Read Books with Pride, 6:30-7:30 pm, Mesa Public Library, 2400 Central Avenue. The staff of Los Alamos County Library System presents an evening of LGBTQ+ literature and will share their reading recommendations, including new titles and some well-worn favorites. You are invited to share your own book suggestions or just come to listen.
