LAPS Reminds Parents To Register Students For 2022-2023 School Year

LAPS NEWS RELEASE

Before heading out on vacation to summer camps, the pool or whatever summer fun is planned, parents are reminded to register their children for the 2022-2023 school year.

Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) online registration is open for all students planning to attend LAPS in the fall. This includes returning students, new students, kindergarten and preschool. There are still preschool slots available at all elementary schools.

LAPS uses SchoolMint Registration for this process each school year. The system is fully secure and environmentally conscientious, and allows the district to verify all student information prior to the start of the new school year.

The registration system also allows for the electronic signing of all annual permission forms. The district has streamlined this process for parents this year to minimize the time it takes for parents to re-register a student.

All students planning to attend any LAPS site must complete the registration process. Middle and high school students who completed course selection also are required to complete registration, as this is a different process than course selection.

LAPS does provide bus service for all Los Alamos County elementary students who live at least 1 mile from the school, for middle school students who live 1.5 miles from the school, and for high school students who live 2 miles from the school. Transportation for students who live outside of Los Alamos County is not provided.

Families eligible for bus service must complete a bus card for each student who will ride the bus. For more information and to complete the bus card, visit https://laschools.net/transportation/.

Returning Students

A student attending any LAPS school will be a returning student for the 2022-2023 school year. This includes out-of-district students who attended during the 2021-2022 school year, and students enrolled in the PreK program. Students in 6th grade moving from a LAPS elementary school to the middle school, or 8th grade students at the middle school moving to Topper Freshman Academy for the 2022-2023 school year are considered returning students.

New Students

Out-of-district students who wish to attend LAPS and did not attend a LAPS school during the 2021-2022 school should apply using the Open Registration Form. New students residing in Los Alamos County also should use the New Student Registration Form.

Kindergarten

Admission to kindergarten as required by New Mexico State Statute (N.M. Stat. Ann. § 22-13-3), shall be made solely on the basis of chronological age. A child who is 5 years of age prior to 12:01 am MDT on September 1 of the school year can enter kindergarten at the beginning of that school year. Students who were part of the NM PreK program or PK4 who are enrolling in kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year may enroll as returning students for the kindergarten enrollment. The Kindergarten Requirements Letter may be found here. Kindergarten Roundup will be held on Wednesday, April 13 at each elementary site.

Preschool

Preschool programs are available at all five elementary schools. However, this program is not open to out-of-district students. A child who is 4 years of age prior to 12:01 am MDT on September 1, 2022 may enroll for preschool for the 2022-2023 school year.

Online Learning Options

The Los Alamos Online Learning Academy is also an option for students in kindergarten through 8th grade who wish to learn in an online setting rather than in person.

Forms are available in both English and Spanish. For more information and to register using either a computer or smartphone, visit https://sites.google.com/laschools.net/registration/home.

Students planning to participate on a sports team at the middle school or high school must also complete the athletics registration process. Physicals must be completed after April 1.
