County Encourages Participation In Operation Green Light Nov. 4-11 In Support Of Local Veterans

COUNTY NEWS RELEASE

In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, Los Alamos County encourages citizens to illuminate homes and businesses with green lights from November 4-11 as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort uniting counties in support of military veterans. The annual initiative, led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), raises awareness around the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families.

The County seeks to honor individuals who have made countless sacrifices for freedom by placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all. Veterans continue to serve our community in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, religious groups, civil service, and by functioning as County Veterans Service Officers who help fellow former service members access funding allocated in federal health, disability and compensation benefits each year, as well as other services supporting the approximately 200,000 service members who transition into civilian communities annually.

In addition to lighting county buildings, County officials look forward to seeing residents, businesses, and other organizations participate by simply changing one light bulb to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends. By shining a green light, community members can demonstrate their respect, admiration, and gratitude for all the veterans who have served in the Armed Forces. Their contributions and sacrifices have been vital in maintaining the freedoms and way of life enjoyed by our citizens.

Los Alamos County Council will proclaim November 4-11 Operation Green Light week on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at their regular session in White Rock Fire Station #3 (129 NM-4). Interested veterans and members of the community are encouraged to attend.

Operation Green Light has grown into a national movement, with hundreds of counties and national landmarks coming together to shine a light for veterans and their families. Learn more about Operation Green Light through the NACo website.
