Alan Hack, long time Los Alamos resident died on Sept 26. 2026.
Born in the Bronx, NYC on March 13, 1943, he attended Dewitt Clinton High School, Hunter College, and NYU. Alan met his wife Karen Steinberg at their beloved summer camp Buck’s Rock in New Milford Ct. In 1967 the couple moved to Los Alamos when Alan was hired by the Health and Safety Division of the Lab for what was meant to be a short adventure away from NYC. Los Alamos soon became their permanent home.
Alan was an Industrial Hygienist, and the highlight of his career was developing respiratory masks. When his research work disappeared in changing times, he worked in various places in the lab keeping things safe.
Alan was active with the Los Alamos Ham Radio community and their work with NM Search and Rescue.
With his family, Alan was a longtime member of Los Alamos Jewish Center, where he tended to the synagogue’s building maintenance for many decades. He found great community at the White Rock Senior Center and as a member of LAJC Menches’ Bagel Group.
He was predeceased by his wife Karen in 2009 and is survived by his daughters Sam Hack of
Kingston, NY and Shana Hack and Son-in-Law Scott Cox of Santa Fe.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of the following organizations, all close to our father’s heart:
● Chef Jose’s World Central Kitchens. WCK.org
● National Organization of Free and Charitable Clinics. NOFC.org
● The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Collation, working to protect Bears Ears National Park.

We ask that you think of Alan when you get your seasonal vaccinations and vote Blue in
November. He famously loved science and hated fascists.
A memorial service will be held at the Los Alamos Jewish Center on Sunday Oct. 25th at 1pm.
A nosh and shmooze to follow.
The service will be streamed.
