LAPD NEWS RELEASE
To address concerns of illegal activity, the Los Alamos Police Department’s (LAPD) Criminal Investigation Division completed “Operation High Standards” during June and July. During the operation, detectives utilized confidential informants under 21 years of age to attempt to purchase alcohol and illegal THC products from liquor stores, smoke shops, and dispensaries in Los Alamos County.
At four different establishments, detectives and confidential informants experienced full compliance with New Mexico law—informants were asked for government identification for age verification and were denied purchase.
On three different occasions, with three different employees, confidential informants purchased THC-labeled products from Smoke Vibez at 800 Trinity Drive, Suite A, Los Alamos, NM 87544 without age verification occurring.
In coordination with the New Mexico Licensing and Regulation Enforcement Bureau, the three THC-products purchased were tested in a New Mexico laboratory. After testing, laboratory results show two products contained high THC-levels making them illegal for sale and one product was found to be “counterfeit” meaning it contained hemp and dangerous pesticides. After receiving the laboratory results, during September, LAPD detectives and Special Agents from the Enforcement Bureau ensured Smoke Vibez employees were educated on New Mexico law and dangerous, illegal products were removed from shelves.
Due to Smoke Vibez’s cooperation and compliance, Special Agents with the Enforcement Bureau focused on education and best practices moving forward instead of criminal enforcement action usually taken after a second violation.
