Los Alamos County has recently learned that a delay in manufacturing custom pump and filtration parts has caused the reopening of the Olympic-sized pool to be pushed back to January 2027.

The pool resurfacing project had remained on schedule and was expected to be completed by November. However, the final plastering of the pool surface requires the pool to be filled with water, to properly cure. Given the state of the existing pump (see above photo), the project team decided that it was best to replace the entire pump and filtration system, while the pool is currently closed. The pumps and filtration system were scheduled to be replaced soon and the project team felt it was better to extend this current closure and not risk curing complications of the plastering, rather than open now and have another prolonged closure.  

“While we are disappointed in the delay, we continue to move the project forward,” said Project Manager Manuel Martinez. “We are working hard to make sure the project is completed as soon as the parts arrive and are installed. We’re very excited for swimmers to once again enjoy this amazing community amenity.”

The contractor for the mechanical replacement diligently worked with the manufacturer to secure the parts for the originally scheduled November 2026 reopening. However, increased demand from the manufacturer and the time needed to create custom parts have resulted in a reopening of the facility in January 2027. The project team is continuing to explore all options to expedite this solution.

Updates on the expected reopening will be shared once shipment of the parts is confirmed. Options to maintain the original reopening date were investigated, including bringing in a temporary pumping system, but none were feasible.

Los Alamos County is committed to providing alternative options for swimmers, is reviewing options with regional indoor pool providers.
