The Rotary Club of Los Alamos invites the community to help turn plastic caps into benches for Clean Up Los Alamos Day this Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).
Volunteers will help sort collected plastic caps that can be recycled into benches while learning about single-use plastic waste, recycling, and the different types of plastics encountered in everyday life. Participants will also learn how plastics are identified, separated, processed, and recycled, as well as why some materials are much easier to recycle than others.
The event is designed to combine hands-on community service with education about the waste stream and the environmental challenges created by disposable plastics. Community members are welcome to participate for part or all of the three-hour event, and no previous experience is necessary.
Part of Rotary’s broader mission of creating lasting change in communities is to support projects aimed at improving the environment alongside efforts in areas such as health, education, peace, clean water, and economic development. Rotary encourages clubs to identify local needs, work with community partners, and involve members and volunteers directly in service projects that can produce lasting benefits.
