Community Meeting Monday, August 24 at 6 p.m. at the Truchas Community Center

Operational Update: Today, crews constructed handline from the northern containment line across the Rio Medio, just west of Rito Gallina, connecting to Road 306E. A containment line is a constructed or natural barrier used to control a fire which can reasonably be expected to stop the fire’s spread. Along Road 306, crews chipped vegetation that had been removed to improve the contingency line. A contingency line is used as a back-up physical barrier that is built ahead of a fire to stop the spread, if it breaches the primary control features.

On the southern side of the fire, just south of Cañon Chimayo, Hotshot crews are working directly along the fire’s edge to increase containment toward Cañada Vaca and secure the southern side. A spike camp has been established to support crews working in the area. Spike camps are separate from the main fire camp and provide logistical support for crews throughout their assignment.

One of the incident’s management objectives is to protect critical values at risk, including private and Tribal lands, public lands, watersheds, critical infrastructure, cultural sites, and natural resources. Incident management works closely with Tribes, local communities, cooperators, and partner agencies to accomplish the incident’s goals.
