The Los Alamos Family YMCA’s Annual Firecracker 5K Kicks Off Independence Day Celebration In Central Square That Drew More Than 400 Participants

More than 400 runners and walkers, volunteers, local businesses, nonprofits, first responders, musicians, vendors, and spectators came together on Independence Day to celebrate what makes Los Alamos special: a community that shows up for one another.

The Family YMCA’s Annual Firecracker 5K once again served as the starting point for a day filled with connection, celebration, and hometown pride. With 231 registered participants and more than 20 additional community members joining on race morning, more than 250 runners and walkers filled the streets before making way for the beloved Fourth of July parade and festivities.

The celebration continued in Central Park Square, where families gathered to enjoy pancakes served by Kiwanis, hot dogs provided by the American Legion, shave ice, local vendors, games, crafts, music, and activities for all ages. Children laughed, neighbors reconnected, and visitors experienced the welcoming spirit that makes Los Alamos a remarkable place to live and visit.

“The Firecracker 5K is about so much more than crossing a finish line,” said Veronika Magnelind, Director of Stewardship and Communication at The Family YMCA. “It’s about bringing people together. Seeing families, friends, neighbors, and visitors celebrating side by side reminded us that the greatest strength of our community isn’t found in the race itself, it’s found in the people who choose to show up for one another.”

The Family YMCA extends its heartfelt gratitude to the many organizations, businesses, and individuals whose generosity made the celebration possible.

A special thank you goes to Los Alamos Medical Center for donating all of the Gatorade and bottled water that kept participants hydrated throughout the event.

The YMCA also extends sincere appreciation to the Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos for serving an excellent pancake breakfast, the American Legion for providing hot dogs and cooling shave ice, the Los Alamos Police Department and Los Alamos Fire Department for ensuring the safety of participants and spectators, State Road Dawg 4 for bringing music and energy to the parade, and Central Park Square Management for graciously hosting the post-race celebration.

Behind the scenes, dozens of volunteers dedicated their time before sunrise and throughout the morning, helping with everything from registration and race operations to course support, hydration stations, setup, cleanup, food preparation and cheering participants across the finish line. Their commitment helped create a welcoming experience for everyone who attended.

“Events like this remind us what can happen when a community comes together with a shared purpose,” Magnelind said. “Every volunteer, sponsor, vendor, first responder, musician, and participant played a role in creating a celebration that reflected the very best of Los Alamos. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make the day such a success.”

As the celebration continued with the annual Fourth of July parade, the spirit of the morning carried throughout the community, creating a joyful start to Independence Day and a reminder that the strongest traditions are the ones built together.

The Family YMCA looks forward to welcoming the community back next year for another Firecracker 5K and Independence Day celebration. See you all again in 2027!
