LTE: David Hampton For UNM-LA Advisory Board

BY JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

We have some good candidates running for the UNM-LA Advisory Board, and top among them is David Hampton.

David Hampton is committed to community service. He has served on multiple Boards. Those that I remember without googling include the P&Z, County Transportation, Arts Council, Parks and Rec, the Coop—and most importantly for this endorsement, the UNM-LA Advisory Board.

David attends County Council meetings (in person…for the whole meeting) and knows the County leadership, which, of course, is critical for collaboration in any County position. Through engagement in the community and listening to people, he synthesizes good ideas and represents those ideas in whatever organization he’s involved with. And he’s also really good with budget.

David uses all those skills in his position as Vice Chair to the UNM-LA Advisory Board. He understands the limitations of the UNM-LA Advisory Board, and that, unlike the School Board, which gives direction to the LAPS superintendent, the UNM-LA board can only give advice. But within this Advisory Board role, David continues to listen in the community about what it needs from UNM-LA and brings this “advice” back to the Administration.

David Hampton:

  • used his connections in Los Alamos County to promote the passage of the UNM-LA general obligation bonds at 66% approval rating after the bond had failed during multiple prior elections;
  • is the good steward of the UNM-LA budget;
  • seeks to creative new revenue streams to complement state funding;
  • contributes to increasing enrollment by working with regional partners to understand what the students, businesses, and LANL need for a creative workforce; and
  • is diligent in reviewing, revising, and implementing plans each quarter to support the framework for decision-making for the UNM–LA community.

My vote is David E. Hampton.

The UNM-LA election is at large. That means every registered voter (or eligible to register at the poles) can vote for three candidates. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4. Early voting ends Saturday, Nov. 1.
