LAPS: Applicants Sought For LAPS School Board District 2 Vacancy

LAPS NEWS RELEASE

The Los Alamos School Board is in search of a person to fill the vacancy left on the board with the departure of current member Antonio Jaurigue who represents School Board District 2.

President Jaurigue cited personal reasons for his resignation from the School Board, saying that “stepping down from the school board is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. However, state law mandates his wife, who has been pursuing her certification in special education, may not be hired by the district while he is a board member.

“I wish to resign before she applies for any position,” he said.

The School Board plans to begin accepting applications on April 30, through May 15, 2024. The School Board will make a final decision at the School Board meeting on May 23, 2024. The term will run through Dec. 31, 2025.

School board members are responsible for overseeing the Superintendent of Los Alamos Public
Schools, approving the district’s annual budget, and promoting the overall success and well-
being of the school district as a whole.  School board members are required to attend two School Board meetings per month, as well as any special meetings that are scheduled. In addition, school board members must complete training credits  with the New Mexico School
Board Association (https://www.nmsba.org/handbooks/) and participate on selected committees created by the School Board.

Applicants must be a registered voter, over 18 years of age, and reside in District 2. Click https://www.laschools.net/school-board/district-maps to view the district maps. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, including relevant experience and attributes that you would bring to the position, and a resume to the
board secretary, Debra Bell, at d.bell@laschools.net or drop off at 2075 Trinity Drive with “attention Mrs. Bell”.

There will be a question-and-answer session for potential candidates at the LAPS Board Room
at 2075 Trinity Drive on Monday, May 13 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided.  For questions or more information, contact Mrs. Bell at 663-2230.
