Constitution Day, Sept. 17, celebrates the U.S. Constitution and the freedoms it protects. The annual Constitution Day Essay Contest, sponsored by the Los Alamos Federated Republican Women (LAFRW), is Designed to challenge students to learn more about the Constitution and to express original, thoughtful ideas in essay writing.
Essays are judged on show completely and clearly the ideas are stated and supported. Grammar, spelling and punctuation are also considered. Judging is blind. The contest is for students in grades 4-12 who live in or attend school in Los Alamos County.
This year students in grades 4-6 and in middle school are asked to write about their favorite signer of the U.S. Constitution and why he is their favorite. High school students are asked to answer this question: How does the U.S. Constitution establish and maintain a culture of liberty?
Winners receive a cash award:
- $300 high school;
- $200 middle school; and
- $100 grades 4-6.
The Awards Ceremony is Oct. 14 at the Constitution Day Dinner sponsored by the Republican Party of Los Alamos. The dinner will be at Cottonwood on the Greens. Winners will be notified no later than Oct. 7 and are invited along with one guest each to attend the dinner at no cost. The winners will be invited, but not required, to read their essays at the dinner. Winners are not required to attend the event.
Entries are due no later than 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29. Place entries in the box marked “Constitution Day Essay Entries” at Aspen Copies, 1907 Central Avenue.
