J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee Announces 2023 Scholarship Awards

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee (JROMC) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 scholarship awards for Los Alamos and regional high school seniors.

This year’s winners are:

Los Alamos High School

Yeanwoo Park: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Scholarship, funded by the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee, is awarded to a student for outstanding promise in science and mathematics. 

Isaac Gao: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Nancy Laubach Freed, funded privately, is awarded to a student for outstanding academic achievements. 

Sonja Ebey: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Nicholas C. Metropolis, funded privately, is awarded to a student who demonstrates outstanding promise in the mathematical sciences. 

Violet Henderson: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Rosalie Heller, funded privately, is awarded to a student with an exceptional academic record who has demonstrated a significant interest in classical music. 

Adeline Feng: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by the New Mexico Consortium, is awarded to a student who shows exceptional promise for future contributions to society and plans to attend a New Mexico school of higher education. 

Quinton Geller: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by the Committee, is awarded for outstanding academic achievements. 

Madelyn Crotzer: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by the Class of 1970, is awarded for excellence in the arts or sciences. 

Ming-Yuan Lo: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Richard C. Swenson, privately funded, is awarded to a student with outstanding academic achievements and who demonstrates exceptional promise in physics or mathematical sciences. 

Santa Fe High School

Nathaniel Steiger: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Satch Cowan, funded by the Delle Foundation, is awarded to a student from a regional high school with an excellent academic record who demonstrates outstanding promise in science or medicine.

Lucas Blakeslee: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Nicholas C. Metropolis, funded privately, is awarded to a student from a regional high school who demonstrates outstanding promise in mathematics, physics, chemistry, or biology.

Justin Mirabal: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by the New Mexico Consortium, is awarded to a student from a regional high school who shows exceptional promise of future contributions to society and plans to attend a New Mexico school of higher education. 

Jacob Mirabal: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in Memory of Houston T. (Terry) Hawkins, funded privately, is awarded to a student at a regional high school who demonstrates an interest in pursuing a career in basic or applied physical sciences, life sciences, and mathematics or computer science and demonstrates exceptional promise of future contributions to society.

Capital High School

Isel Aragon: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship funded by the Committee is awarded to a student who demonstrates an interest in pursuing a career in basic or applied physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, or computer science.

Leslie Garcia: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship funded by the Committee is awarded to a student who demonstrates an interest in pursuing a career in basic or applied physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, or computer science. 

Viviana Ornelas: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in Memory of Michael Williams, funded privately, is awarded to a student from a regional high school who demonstrates exceptional promise of future contributions to society.

The first JROMC scholarship was awarded in 1984 to a graduating senior from Los Alamos High School in memory of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The scope of this program has grown over the years to multiple scholarships awarded at LAHS and regional high schools. This year JROMC awarded 15 scholarships totaling $47,000, bringing the grand total to $753,000.

Scholarships are granted to graduating high school seniors based on merit and recognize a variety of achievements. The philanthropic organization’s scholarship program is supported by several limited-term endowments, corporate and charitable partners, and numerous individual donations.

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee is dedicated to preserving the legacy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the first director of Los Alamos National Laboratory and one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century. In addition to its annual scholarship program, the JROMC sponsors the Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture. This year the free lecture will be “Printing Soft Objects and Functional Tissues” by Professor Jennifer Lewis, Jianming Yu Professor of Arts and Sciences at Harvard. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 19 at Duane Smith Auditorium.
