The Summit Garden Club has awarded its 2023 Pat Edmonds-Sue Graves Scholarship to Ginnie (Gwendolyn) Pickett of Los Alamos. This scholarship has been given to an LAHS Senior majoring in environmental studies each year for 51 years.

As early as 7th grade, in Curtis Terrill’s science class, Pickett recognized her interest in insects – their needs and roles in nature.  In the summer of her sophomore year of high school, she visited the Albuquerque Bio Park and spoke with a residing scientist about careers in entomology research, and decided to make that her field of study.

In the fall, she will attend New Mexico State University at Las Cruces, as an entomology major, and plans to continue to a PhD program in forensic entomology.  Her goal is to use her knowledge of insects in food production.  In addition to her strong academic record, she is a Championship level Irish dancer.
