On National Fentanyl Awareness Day, Be Informed – Take Harm Reduction Overdose Response Training Online

Tuesday, May 9 is National Fentanyl Awareness Day

Facing the sad reality that Fentanyl, the single deadliest drug threat the nation has ever encountered, is in our community entities have been spreading the word on the extreme dangers of the drug to prevent the overdoses that are claiming lives every day throughout the country.

On Monday (May1) Los Alamos Public Schools employees attended Harm Reduction Overdose Response Training given by Pauly Maldonado, Harm Reduction Substance Use Coordinator for the Public Health Division of the New Mexico Department of Health. A special session was also held for members of the public as well as additional LAPS employees.

Maldonado provided the Los Alamos Reporter with electronic access to his comprehensive presentation that includes important information on:

LAPS Supt. Jennifer Guy said it is very important to her that everyone can find the resources they need. High school and middle school staff have already received the training and the district will continue to provide it for elementary school and other staff. The goal is to have presentations for all high school and middle school students.

Residential vocational training school for adults 18+ who have experienced any type of  addiction and have already been through detox. Delancey Street is not a rehab facility  and there are no medical professionals on staff. Delancey Street is a fully self-sufficient  community where all are responsible for pitching in, and funds are made through  workshops, catering, and other on-site ventures. There is no cost associated with  residency there.  

Those who are incarcerated can reach out to Delancey Street through a letter.  Otherwise, folks can call and ask to speak to intake for an interview.

The Addiction and Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) is a comprehensive treatment  facility focused on treating substance use disorders in adults over the age of 21 through  Case Management, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), Outpatient Detoxification,  Primary Care, Psychiatric Services, and Therapy. The STAR Team serves teens under the  age of 21 and includes staff that specializes in the treatment of addicted adolescents  and their families. There are also special teams for Dual Diagnosis (addiction and mental  health diagnoses), for people who are pregnant or who have recently given birth, and a  team for adults with trauma/PTSD.
