Earlier this month the Los Alamos High School Topper Cheer Team attended a Varsity Spirit Cheer Camp in Colorado Springs. These camps are a way for the athletes to establish trust, build relationships, and show commitment to the sport. They consist of setting individual and team goals, mastering cheer skills, and making lifelong memories with teammates.
The Topper Cheer team had rigorous twelve hour days learning new skills, cheers, and team building. On the first night of camp, the Toppers earned the prestigious Top Banana award for showing extreme leadership and team spirit. They also earned two gold Superior ribbons that were given as part of overall team evaluations. In addition to the gold superior awards the Topper Cheer team also earned four pin it forward awards, three blue Superior ribbons, two second place trophies, and an overall team trophy.
Senior Megan Martinez, Freshman Allyson Harbert, and Freshman Sophia Sisneros were selected as UCA All-American Cheerleaders during the final day of camp. UCA All-Americans are selected based on multiple skills and overall superior cheerleading ability. Only the top 10% of cheerleaders are selected to become UCA All-Americans. As part of this honor, the selected Topper All-American cheerleaders have earned the opportunity to participate in Special Events throughout the United States and Europe. The girls are looking forward to attending the New Year’s Day Parade in London and will be holding several fundraisers over the next few months to help offset the cost of the trip.

The team came home with much more than just awards and recognition, they also came home with a stronger team bond and newly established friendships with several other teams that attended camp.
Congratulations to the Topper Cheer team for the outstanding showing at the Varsity Cheer camp and for being exceptional representatives of LAHS and the community of Los Alamos!
