Three University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) students each recently received $1,300 in N3B scholarships to pursue their academic interests in the energy, environmental and radioactive waste management fields. They are Daniel Gallegos, Arianna Romero and Dylan Romero.
As the primary contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office, tasked with addressing environmental impacts from Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) Manhattan Project and Cold War operations, N3B hopes to inspire youth in its mission-related fields.
Gallegos plans to pursue mechanical engineering at UNM-LA and aims to create more innovative and effective technologies, including technologies for waste management, he said.
Arianna Romero moved from Las Vegas, Nevada, to attend UNM-LA and study biology. One of her academic interests is biofuels and researching how to better use food waste for renewable energy.
Dylan Romero, a student in UNM-LA’s pre-engineering program, has a passion for problem-solving and working on innovative, advanced mechanical systems. He is participating in a part-time internship at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies at LANL.
The UNM-LA students qualified for N3B’s scholarships based on their enrollment in environmental science, pre-engineering, science or other degrees related to the energy, environmental and radioactive waste management industry. They also completed essays about their plans to put their degrees to use.
