Los Alamos Young Guns shotgun sports team traveled to Farmington for the Zone 1 Competition November 13 and 14 where the varsity females took first, second and third place in singles. Almost 50 athletes from throughout Northern New Mexico competed in the event.
In the Varsity Females SIngles competition, Ana Schmitz took first place breaking 95 clays out of 100, Alyssa Vigil took second place with 94, and Rhyen Vigil took third place with 92.
In the Varsity Handicap event, Alyssa Vigil took 2nd, Rhyen Vigil took 3rd, Ana Schmitz took 5th and Sarah Randall took 6th.
In Varsity Female Doubles, Alyssa Vigil – 1st, Ana Schmitz – 3rd, Rhyen Vigil – 4th, Sarah Randall – 5th.
In the Zone 1 Varsity Skeet Competition (mixed team), Gavin Robles took 1st, Matthew Nowell, took 2nd, Alyssa Vigil took 3rd, Donovan Allen took 4th, Rhyen Vigil took 6th, Ana Schmitz took 7th and Sarah Randall took 8th.
In the Female Intermediate Competition, Luisa Schmitz placed 2nd in singles, handicap and doubles.
On the Male Varsity Team, Gavin Robles had a good day, taking 1st place in singles and 1st place in doubles. Matthew Nowell took 5th place in singles, Morgan Catlin took 8th place and Donovan Allen took 14th.
The Varsity Male Handicap competition saw some excitement with a three-way tie for first place and a shoot-off between Matthew Nowell, Elijah Gallegos (Aztec) and Garrett Kirby (Aztec). Kirby took 1st place and Matthew Nowell took 2nd with one less clay. Morgan Catlin took 6th place.
In Varsity Male Doubles, Gavin Robles was on top of the podium in 1st place, Morgan Catlin in 4th place, Matthew Nowell in 8th place and Donovan Allen in 11th place.
Los Alamos Young Guns are looking forward to the Dec. 11-12 Zone 1 competition in Albuquerque.
The team has room for more varsity athletes grades 9-12 and intermediate grades 5-8. Practices are at the Los Alamos Sportsmen’s Club on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call (505) 309-1762.
