COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
On Tuesday, Nov. 30, the Los Alamos County Community Services Department will be hosting Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Audit and Transition Plan project meetings in an effort to discuss how we can work together to improve our accessibility to those in our community with disabilities. This audit is focused on recreational facilities in our community which include athletic fields, picnic areas, trails, playgrounds, and other amenities. We are seeking input regarding barriers of use that you may have experienced. Los Alamos County desires to have our community assets accessible to all. Below is the meeting information, with two time options, 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., that will be held via Zoom teleconferencing. Each meeting should last approximately 90 minutes.
The ADA Audit and Transition Plan is a requirement of the Americans with Disabilities Act .This federal civil rights law prohibits discrimination based on disability by Los Alamos County and imposes several affirmative mandates. One is an audit of all existing parks and facilities, and the other is a phased schedule of retrofit known as a Transition Plan. These two tasks are described in the Title II regulation at 28 CFR Part 35.
This process also requires public input from the community about barriers to use of outdoor facilities and amenities. The input helps identify the access preferences and priorities of persons with disabilities. Disabilities include visual, hearing, physical, mental, and cognitive concerns.
