Obituary: Ramona Padilla Vigil Sept. 13, 1931 – Sept. 10, 2021

Ramona Padilla Vigil, age 89, a resident of Los Alamos passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Carmen Duran and Hilario Padilla; husband, Eloy Vigil; son, Joseph Vigil; sisters, Rosina Padilla and Merlinda Romero; and brothers, Leroy Padilla, and Larry Padilla.

Ramona was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on September 13, 1931. She was the oldest child, and had four sisters and two brothers. She attended public schools in Santa Fe. Ramona started dating Eloy Vigil in 1947, and they were married in 1950 at St. Francis Cathedral. Five years later, the young couple moved to Los Alamos, where she began her 30-year entrepreneur career owning and operating four clothing stores; Reeves, The Clothes Rack, The Outlet, and The Trend Shop. Ramona and Eloy had three children, Alfredo born in 1951, Yolanda in 1955, and Joseph in 1962. The family now includes seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Los Alamos and The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe. Ramona was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013. As her health declined, she moved to Santa Fe Care Nursing Facility in 2018.

She is survived by her son, Alfredo Vigil and wife, Eleanor of Taos; daughter, Yolanda Brewer and husband, Dan of Santa Fe; sisters, Jennie Jiron of Santa Fe; and Alice Velarde and husband, Alex of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Ramon Romero y Vigil and wife, Damita of New Jersey; Carmela Smith of Albuquerque; Ryan McCarthy and husband, Keith of Carlsbad; Lia Romero y Vigil of Chicago; Vincent Smith and wife, Jessica of Albuquerque; Patrick Vigil and wife, Maria of Albuquerque; and Anthony Vigil and wife, Aryanne of Los Alamos; and great-grandchildren, Gabriela Warren y Vigil, Jackson Romero y Vigil, Eva Clevenger, Easton Smith, Madison McCarthy, and Shauna McCarthy; and many other relatives and friends.

Public visitation and a Rosary was held on Tuesday, September 14 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi September 15 and burial at Rosario Cemetery next to Eloy on September 16.

Assisting the family as Pallbearers were Ramon Romero y Vigil, Carmela Smith, Ryan McCarthy, Lia Romero y Vigil, Vincent Smith, Patrick Vigil, Anthony Vigil, and Danny Romero.
