Public Works Projects:
Canyon Rim Trail Underpass
The current highway detour will be shifted to the north side of NM502 allowing the contractor towork on the south side of the road installing precast concrete boxes and retaining walls. Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.
North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)
TLC Plumbing and Utility continue road and utility improvements on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd, Tsankawi St, Oro Ct, Tsankawi Ct, Cedro Ct, and Big Rock Loop South. Utility work will continue on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd and Tsankawi St including new water and gas main lines. New water service cans and gas service lines to homes will continue to be installed along Capulin Rd and Alamos Rd. Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.
Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic around work zones. Access to residents as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, school bus routes, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to be alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.
Canyon Rim Walking Trail
GME Emulsion, LLC will begin trail rehabilitation on Canyon Rim Walking Trail from Knecht St to the trail termini at the parking lot currently under construction with the underpass. The first section of trail repair will be between Knecht St and DP road and second section is from DP Road to the trail termini. These sections of the trail will be closed during the repairs which include mill and overlay, crack sealing, and fog seal. No street closure will occur during the construction.
Work commences on Tuesday, July 27 and scheduled for two weeks. Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, weather permitting.
Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr.)
The bike lane along Canyon Road adjacent to the construction area remains closed pending repaving. Bicyclists are encouraged to ride in the driving lane as the material in the bike lane is soft. The sidewalk is open from the Nature Center to the back drive of the Aquatic Center. From there, pedestrians can walk in the bike lane area between the traffic control devices and construction fence.
The public is also reminded that the “back driveway” to the Aquatic Center is closed to the public during construction. Please do not use this area to access the trail. Please use the trail entrance at the Nature Center.
Traffic & Streets Division Projects:
The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Traffic & Streets Division staff. Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones.
Grand Canyon and Aragon Ave. Intersection Asphalt Repairs
Crews will be patching asphalt at the intersection of Grand Canyon and Aragon Ave., Monday and Tuesday starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending daily by 3:30 p.m. There will be a flagging operation in place.
Canyon Glen – Bridge Work
Crews will be doing bridge repair work at Canyon Glen. Work will get underway Wednesday and continue through Friday. Crews will start work at 7:30 a.m. and end by 3:30 daily. There will be a flagging operation in place.
County-Wide Roadway Striping Continues
Crews will continue striping roads Monday morning and working through various parts of the County until complete. They begin each day at 7:30 a.m. and end by 3:30 p.m.
Non-County Projects:
The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed, but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slow down in work zones.
Rockfall Mitigation project to begin on NM 502
The New Mexico Department of Transportation along with GeoStabilization International (GSI) will begin a rockfall mitigation project on Monday August 16, 2021, in the Los Alamos area.
Due to its composition, the existing hillside is subject to rockfalls during rain and snow events which can pose a danger to passing motorists. The project will remove any rocks that are deemed a threat to motorists, under controlled conditions. The project is expected to take 10 working days to complete, weather permitting.
Work will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Due to the nature of the work, NM 502 will be closed along a 2-mile stretch – from one mile east of Airport Road in Los Alamos to the junction with NM 4 (mile marker 4 to mile marker 6) during working hours. All traffic will be routed onto the truck route into and out of Los Alamos during this time.
Motorists are advised to use caution, obey posted speed limits, expect delays and plan accordingly.
Los Alamos Canyon Bridge Repairs (LANL):
· The bike path reopens evenings and weekends.
· Traffic remains detoured to the bridge’s east side with one lane in each direction.
· The speed limit is 15 mph.

Motorists are reminded to slow down in the construction area; the speed limit is 15 mph. Allow extra time for your commute during peak travel times in the morning and evening.
DP Rd (Work related to Canyon Walk Apts and The Bluffs – Bethel Development)
Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Rd Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction
Roadway reconstruction activities will continue with construction of the remaining sections’ curb & gutter, sidewalks and driveways. These activities will impact DP Rd from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagged/signaled system. One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily.
The contractor work in DP Road is related to the new Canyon Walk Apartments (under construction) and The Bluffs senior housing (soon to be constructed). The roadway reconstruction includes installation of curb and gutter, sidewalks and paving of the roadway. All construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road will continue during the month of August.
