Superintendent
Los Alamos Public Schools

Congratulations to each and every member of the class of 2020.  I am proud of all 270 of  you and how far you’ve come.  And I have faith in how far you can go after high school. This month of celebrating you and meeting the challenge of a global pandemic, and this week’s unique graduation ceremony is not the end, it’s the beginning of a special time in your life.  For now, however, don’t forget to treasure your success and enjoy the celebration.

Everyone is proud of you–especially your family, teachers, mentors, and me. You have earned a high school diploma and nobody can take it away. Over the coming years, you will realize that this is a huge milestone in life, one of many to come.

There are numerous qualities that make the class of 2020 special.  If I were to pick the most important, I would say your caring for fellow students.  This trait will serve you well throughout your life.

You now carry a new responsibility – representing Los Alamos High School with all of its wonderful green and gold traditions.  This month, you have created unique and new Topper traditions. It is truly an honor to graduate from one of the nation’s top high schools.

During your high school years, you hopefully have grown step by step more independent from your parents. Your friends and activities may have taken up a larger share of your life as your parents are learning how to let go.  (By the way, your parents are likely giving themselves an internal high-five and saying, “Yes! We did it!”)

Grit and hard work will outpace talent any day of the week and I know you will find your way in this world, of that I have no doubt. It is your life now. Your champions in the Los Alamos Public Schools will be here to support and offer guidance, when requested.

I want you to remember as you journey out into the world that this path, whatever path you choose, is life. Work hard, enjoy, laugh often, embrace a goal, play, and make the most of every moment.  “There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” —C.S. Lewis

Over the next few weeks, please take time to personally thank the people who helped you navigate through school and make it to graduation. Gratitude creates a benevolent world.

Now, get out there and embrace the next stage. Seize the opportunity to live a wonderful life.  As Dr. Seuss said: “Kid, you’ll move mountains.”

My best to you, Topper Graduates!
