State Fishing Report: Week Of Dec. 31

This fishing report, provided by Dustin Berg of Go Unlimited (supporting disabled anglers) and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catches of the week

lto Lake: Seth Herrera, age 15, and Nathan Herrera, age 11, of Roswell caught their limits of trout, with an average of 14-inches, using corn and Fire Balls Dec. 27.

Chama River: Pearl Ortiz of Santa Fe caught a 21-inch, 2.5-pound brown trout near El Vado Lake using nightcrawlers Dec. 26.

Rio Grande: Tom Chrobocinski of Ojo Caliente caught and released five rainbow trout near Pilar ranging in size from 12 to 16-inches using pink PowerBait Dec. 21.

Trees Lake: Bonnie and Rick Smith of Deming caught their limits of trout and a couple of bass in the recently opened lake using peach-salmon and green-garlic PowerBait Dec. 26.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron Monday morning was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Clayton Lake: The lake is closed to fishing and boating until March 1, 2020.

Conchas Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Costilla Creek: Stream flow near Costilla Monday was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: The lake is open for ice fishing.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fawn Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: Closed due to unsafe ice conditions.

Lake Maloya: Closed due to unsafe ice conditions.

Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: The lake is closed to fishing and boating until March 1, 2020.

Monastery Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Morphy Lake: Closed for a renovation project on the dam and no firm opening date has been set.

Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos Monday morning was 30.6 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair using worms.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery Monday morning was 39.6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge Monday morning was 447 cfs. Fishing upstream from Pilar was fair to good using pink PowerBait.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow Monday morning near Valdez was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora: Stream flow Monday morning was 4.99 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco Monday morning was not measured due to ice. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: The lake was beginning to ice over. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Fishing is open on the Valle Vidal, including Shuree Ponds, July 1-Dec. 31.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest Fishing Report

Abiquiu Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Due to low water levels anglers are advised to use four-wheel drive vehicles to launch boats and watch for obstructions on the water.

Animas River: Water flow below Aztec Monday morning was 174 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing for trout was fair to good using salmon eggs and PowerBait.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing for trout was fair. The Department’s winter trout stocking plan is to stock 6,000 catchable-size rainbow trout per month from November through March.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 111 cfs and 76.6 cfs respectively. Fishing for rainbow and brown trout below El Vado Lake was fair to good using nightcrawlers and flies. We had no reports from anglers below Abiquiu Lake this week.

Cochiti Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: The lake is closed to ice fishing until ice conditions improve. Please remember that only two cutthroat trout are allowed to be harvested per day within the regular five-fish limit.

Heron Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near the town of Jemez Monday morning was 11.1 cfs. Fishing for trout was good near Battleship Rock using green and orange mop flies.

Laguna del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

McGaffey Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Kokanee salmon snagging season is open from Oct. 1 – Dec. 31. We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Gregorio Lake: One angler reported heavy snow on the trail leading to the lake and thick ice covering the lake making fishing inaccessible.

San Juan River: Stream flow Monday morning was 564 cfs. Dry fly fishing for trout in the quality waters was fair using small midge cluster patterns. Fishing for trout in the quality waters with nymph flies was good using red midge larva patterns, olive leech patterns and black larva patterns. Water clarity was about one-foot.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach: Fishing for trout was good using garlic-scented PowerBait, white PowerBait worms and cheese PowerBait.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest Fishing Report

Alumni Pond: Fishing for trout was fair.

Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing for trout was good using salmon-peach PowerBait. Johnny Valencia Junior, age 9, and Xerses Valencia, age 4, caught their limits of trout Dec. 28.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing for trout was good using cheese-flavored PowerBait.

Caballo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Elephant Butte Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Escondida Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gila River: Stream flow Monday morning was 151 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage. It appears now that the lake will be out of commission until 2022.

Bottomless Lakes: Fishing for trout was good using small gold Mepps spinners, Rooster Tails and spoons.

Brantley Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
