Registration for the New Mexico PreK program at Los Alamos Public Schools opens at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10.

There are two half-day programs available (AM or PM, 3 hours each) located at Piñon Elementary School in White Rock. Enrollment for the NM PreK program is by lottery.

To participate in this program, your child must:

  • be 4 years old on or before August 31, 2019;
  • reside in Los Alamos County (this program is not eligible for open enrollment).

If your child lives within the Piñon school zone, bus transportation will be available. Parents of students who reside outside of the school zone must transport their child to school.

To apply for the NM PreK program, complete the 2019-20 New Student application, which is found under “Registration” on the LAPS homepage (laschools.net). Select the NM Pre-K tab. You will then be able to select grade level PK and your program preference.

The lottery will be conducted on June 3 and parents will be notified by June 15. Students who are not chosen in the lottery will be placed on a waiting list.

 “The Pre-K Program at Pinon has successfully prepared my son, Hendrix, for kindergarten,” said Cynthia Deschamp, a parent of a past PreK student. “Through the curriculum, he has advanced significantly, from his writing skills to his social behavior.”

The program is in session for three hours per day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday during the school year. Students are not in attendance on Wednesdays which are used for staff planning, training and parent meetings. There is a maximum enrollment in each four-year-old program contingent upon state funding, so applications are part of a lottery process. There is no cost to parents for students selected to attend.
