ARCHDIOCESE OF SANTA FE NEWS
On March 8, the U. S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Mexico, sitting in Albuquerque, entered an order setting out a comprehensive claims process for survivors of child sex abuse by clergy in the pending Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. The order also provides a deadline for filing sex abuse claims of June 17, 2019.
“This order is the first step in what we hope will be a global resolution to provide fair compensation to all survivors of sex abuse by clergy,” said Archbishop John C. Wester of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, “while we work collaboratively with the committee of sex abuse survivors and our insurers to maximize the outreach to those who might have claims.”
Notice pursuant to the order will be published in dozens of regional and local media, both print and on-line, with some national publication, as well. The notice is part of an approved claims process that will remain completely confidential. The proof of claim form will be provided to anyone requesting information, all in an effort to make this process as simple and straightforward as possible, while remaining strictly confidential.
“After the claims filing deadline of June 17, 2019, we are hopeful that mediation among the survivors’ committee, insurers, archdiocese, and other parties will result in a consensual plan providing an appropriate resolution for each and every claimant. The archdiocese will continue to work closely with the committee and other parties to ensure the most expeditious and fair resolution as possible,” said Archbishop Wester.
