The Los Alamos Rugby Club is pleased to announce a new Youth Rugby season is starting. High School Girls and Boys have already started practices, and Youth (touch) Rugby for kids aged 6-12 will start March 11.

Youth touch rugby is similar to soccer except that you pass the ball with your hands instead of your feet. Unlike football, there is continuous motion of all the players running into position because the play does not stop when the ball touches the ground or a player is tagged. Contact julia.sheppard@gmail.com for more information.

Although all kids are required to wear mouthguards, this is only a precaution. They are tagging only, but can start tackle leagues at age 11 if they choose. Tackle leagues (for middle school aged kids) will be coached by high school coaches, and anyone interested in tackle should get in touch with Dan Sheppard at shepnerds@gmail.com, or show up at the field.

In our Los Alamos Rugby Club, all coaches are committed to safety, teamwork, sportsmanship and skill development that will last for years. We work toward the long term goals of creating kids who are thoughtful, quick, assertive, and resourceful in their games, and hopefully this will transcend to the rest of their lives as well.

Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:00-5:00 (Ages 6-12) and 4:30-6:00 (High School Girls and Boys teams) at the Upper Pueblo Fields. There will be home scrimmages and some travel to Santa Fe and/or Albuquerque.
