While on patrol, New Mexico Game & Fish Conservation Officer Tyler Twichell spotted this piebald deer near Tierra Amarilla. The piebald coloring is due to a genetic abnormality that leads to a lack of pigmentation in patches around the body. Piebaldism is a recessive trait so both parents must carry the recessive gene to have a chance that a piebald fawn will be produced. Piebald deer are extremely rare and comprise less than two percent of whit-tailed deer. Photo Courtesy NMG&F
