SFNF NEWS RELEASE
Editor’s note: Thank you to all who fought this fire. Thank you to all those who got the word out to the surrounding areas daily, especially Claudia Brookshire. Great job!
The fire is located in the Espenola Ranger District, near Sierra Mosca and southeast of Cundiyo, N.M.
The lightning-caused Frijoles Fire, discovered on August 4, 2026, has reached 100% containment and remains at 15,956 acres.
Firefighters completed the majority of suppression work by late September, after which command transitioned to the Española Ranger District under a Type 4 organization. Crews have continued to patrol the fire area, monitor remaining heat, and make repairs to areas affected by fire operations. Forest engineers are also assessing and repairing roads, culverts, and drainage features impacted by the fire and recent weather events.
The fire area received several inches of rain over multiple days, helping reduce heat across the perimeter. The district will continue to monitor post-fire conditions and complete any remaining suppression repair work.
