LANET NEWS RELEASE
What is the future of the internet in Los Alamos? LANet invites community members to learn more during its Community and Customer Update on Thursday, October 22, at 5:30 p.m. In-person registration at SALA Event Center is full; registration remains open for participation by Zoom. (See below)
Wednesday’s Xfinity outage is the latest in a series of disruptions that have affected our community, underscoring how much residents, businesses, schools and community services depend on reliable internet. Los Alamos needs a better solution: a fast, reliable network built to meet our needs today and into the future.
Those disruptions highlight the importance of the Atomic Fiber project—and the questions residents have about what comes next. With construction underway, LANet is hosting this update to explain how it will expand fiber service into more neighborhoods, what residents can expect during the transition and how to prepare for service as connections become available.
The discussion will also address network reliability, including the planned secondary fiber connection through San Ildefonso. A separate route for internet traffic can provide an alternative when one route is disrupted, helping reduce the risk of widespread service interruptions.
“Los Alamos has been talking about communitywide fiber for more than 15 years,” said Allan Saenz, owner of LANet. “It has taken a long time to reach this point, and we’re glad to see construction moving forward. As a local company, we want to help our neighbors understand the project, explore their options and get connected as service reaches their homes.”
Atomic Fiber is a County-owned, open-access network that will allow multiple internet service providers to deliver service over the same fiber infrastructure. LANet will use the network to expand its fiber offerings, bringing symmetrical gigabit service—with matching upload and download speeds—to additional homes and businesses.
The first 149 addresses in White Rock’s Phase 1 area are currently targeted for service around mid-December, subject to construction progress and activation readiness. The event will cover upcoming construction phases, installation expectations and what the transition from wireless to fiber will mean for LANet customers.
