Obituary: James. E. ‘Jim’ Dyson Dec. 10, 1956 – Oct. 2, 2026

James E. “Jim” Dyson, 69, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 2, 2026.

Born in Mansfield, Ohio, to Jack and Janet Dyson, Jim moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico, in 1967. Shortly after graduating from high school, Jim began his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory at just 17 years old. He went on to spend a long career at LANL, where his technical know-how and ingenuity helped support many important and impressive projects. He previously worked at Pajarito Ski Hill and helped establish Bathtub Row Brewery, where he became known as “The Bathtub Row Cowboy.”

To know Jim was to love him, although you needed a sense of humor and thick skin. Known for his straightforward nature, quick wit, and infamous Dyson Scowl, Jim had an enormous heart beneath his tough exterior. He was kind, big-hearted, and fiercely loyal to the people he chose to call his own. If Jim loved you, you knew it, and he would stand by you. He was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need.

Jim was a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan. He was a passionate skier for much of his life, on both snow and water, and kept at it until his knees wouldn’t let him anymore. He loved hunting, fishing, softball, and spending time on the water at Abiquiu Lake. He loved his horses and his Siberian Huskies, having nine beloved Huskies throughout his life. He also loved spending time at Lazy J Ranch and in Chama, where he made many of his favorite memories.

Jim was preceded in death by the love of his life, Augusta “Gus” Dyson.

He is survived by his parents, Jack and Janet Dyson; his children, Jeremiah Dyson, Kimber Taylor, Kristen Dyson, Jamie Smith (Ethan), Jack Dyson (Chelsie), and stepson, Geoffrey Marquez; grandchildren, Kyana, Timmy, Mason, Emma, James, Julie, and Tristan; sisters, Jerree Black (Paul) and Joan Woodruff (Rocky).

A celebration of life will be held at Bathtub Row Brewing Co-Op at 3pm on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

The world is a little quieter without Jim, but we’ll carry the memories we made with him everywhere we go. His humor, his honesty, his loyalty, and his enormous heart will stay with us always.

The family of James Dyson has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the beautiful Espanola Valley 505-747-7477
