I had the privilege of meeting Joseph more than 4 years ago when he was first running for State Auditor. He immediately impressed me with the calm manner he exuded and his very presence projected confidence. He doesn’t brag about or even advertise much about his accomplishments over the past 4 years, yet there are so many.
Mesalands Community College. Have you heard of it for example?
I hadn’t—until I saw something about it on KRQE.
Mesalands is a public community college in Tucumcari with a remarkable wind-energy program that prepares students for careers as wind turbine technicians through hands-on training, certifications and degree programs.
But not long ago, Mesalands was in serious financial trouble – and facing the possibility of closing its doors.
That’s when the State Auditor’s Office stepped in.
A special audit helped uncover what had gone wrong, identify the financial problems threatening the college, and provide a clearer path forward. The State Auditor’s office committed to continue to help by conducting the college’s annual audits to make sure the college is in compliance. Today, Mesalands remains open, educating students and contributing to the economic future of its community.
This is what I want from the people I elect to public office: Do the job. Solve problems. Make a difference.
As our State Auditor, Joe Maestas is doing exactly that!
