COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
On Thursday afternoon, August 27, at around 4pm, a third-party contractor of the Atomic Fiber project cut through the top of a steel gas service line outside of a residence on Grand Canyon. Temporary repairs were made to restore service.
Department of Public Utilities’ Gas, Water, Sewer (GWS) crews were dispatched and worked from 5pm until 12am to get the leak sealed so that gas service could be restored to the residence. Because it is a steel service line, GWS crews cannot legally perform direct welding repairs.
The service line had to be isolated by digging up the tap on the main line and closing off the tapping valve. Crews were able to make a non-welding repair to the service line and install a clamp that allowed for restoration of service until a full replacement can be scheduled with a qualified professional.
The Los Alamos Fire Department remained on scene to keep the scene safe by blocking traffic and wetting down the working zone to prevent static or sparks from creating ignition.
