County: Survey Open For Feedback On Canyon Road Median Design

COUNTY NEWS RELEASE

The Community Services Department, in partnership with Huitt-Zollars and Sites Southwest, is asking residents to participate in a community survey to provide feedback on two designs for the Canyon Road Medians.  The survey is open now and will close at noon on Sept. 13, 2026.

Huitt-Zollars and Sites Southwest have provided direction to Los Alamos County for development of a median template that can be applied to medians in Los Alamos and White Rock. Initiated in 2024, the median design aimed to establish a clear, balanced, and functional approach to address the complexity of the roadway environment and meet NMDOT requirements.

The median design will prioritize staff safety, reduced maintenance, water conservation, effective drainage, and adequate sight distance. The resulting template should provide a safe, accessible, and maintainable median environment while minimizing worker exposure to live traffic. It should also support efficient vegetation management, preserve required sight distances and drainage functions, and reduce the frequency and extent of maintenance activities within the roadway environment.

The overall approach is intended to create a consistent median treatment that balances aesthetics, functionality, safety, and long-term maintenance needs while providing a practical template for future improvements along Canyon Road and Diamond Drive.

These two design elements are available for viewing in the image gallery. We invite you to review the designs and share your thoughts. Your input will support public safety while preserving the character and welcoming nature of our community.
