Santa Fe Tango and the Tango Club of Albuquerque will host Milonga Secreto, an Argentine tango social dance event 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 at Fuller Lodge.

In addition to inviting the community to dance in this historic Lodge, the hope is more people will be interested in participating in this art form.

Argentine tango is a rich musical genre and social partner dance born in the late 19th century in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay. It emerged from a blend of African, Spanish-Cuban, and European immigrant cultures in the working-class port areas.

The music is driven by the melancholic, distinct sound of the bandoneon (an accordion-like instrument), alongside related rhythms like milonga and vals (Argentine waltz). The dance is defined by close embrace, intense non-verbal connection, and improvisation rather than fixed, rigid choreography. Partners share a fluid, responsive embrace that can be closed or open, and steps are led and followed in the moment rather than memorized.
