COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
The Los Alamos Public Library will host the annual Comicon-style celebration, Atomicon 2026, on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Mesa Public Library and Fuller Lodge. The all-day event, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will feature comics, costumes, crafts, games and activities for all ages.
“It is the fifth year that we have dedicated a full day to this signature event,” Senior Librarian Eva Jacobson said. Adults and teens will find workshops, a Lego competition, one-shot role-playing games and speakers on the upper level of Mesa Public Library, while young patrons and their families will explore activities on the lower level and in the wooded space behind the library.
Youth Librarian Melissa Mackey said new additions to the youth floor this year include a trinket trade tent, a RenFairy village and a ceramic figurine painting activity.
Event highlights include:
• Costume contest: 9 to 10 a.m. in front of the library. Cosplayers participating in public voting will pose for a county photographer, and photos will be posted in the lobby for attendee voting until 3:30 p.m.
• Vendor Hall at Fuller Lodge: Open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring local and regional artists, makers and comic vendors. The hall is hosted by the Los Alamos Arts Council.
• Adult and teen activities: Lego competition, miniatures painting workshop, a speaker program with author Octavio Ramo and illustrator Paul Ziomak, and tabletop role-playing games.
• Youth and family activities: Games, caricature drawing, ceramic figure painting and more.
• Sensory-friendly zone: A designated quiet area with self-led sensory activities available all day on the middle floor of the library.
• RenFairy Village: Free popcorn, outdoor games, “magical” guests and trinket trading.
• Costume parade and announcement of winners: from 4 to 4:30 p.m., music will play as cosplayers are invited to showcase their costumes before the 4:30 p.m. red carpet walk and announcement of winners from the costume and Lego contests.
Atomicon is free and open to the public. Costumes are encouraged throughout the event, whether participants are officially entering the costume contest or not.
