Firefighters are responding to two lightning-caused wildfires on the Cuba Ranger District south of Forest Road 315. The Lodin Fire and Spring Fire are located approximately one mile apart and are both being managed under a full suppression strategy.
Operations: The Lodin Fire is the larger of the two incidents, at six acres, and is exhibiting active fire behavior, including torching and short-range spotting in heavy mixed-conifer fuels. Resources are responding from the Cuba, Coyote, and Jemez Ranger Districts with additional resources on the way. Firefighters will continue constructing handline and saw line throughout the day and into the evening. Incident commanders anticipate completing containment line overnight or early tomorrow morning. A Type 1 helicopter has been requested to utilize a nearby water source in support of suppression efforts during the next day
The Spring Fire was identified by aerial resources during reconnaissance operations. Initial attack crews responded quickly and successfully completed saw line and handline around the fire Monday evening. Because of the larger size and greater potential threat posed by the Lodin Fire, suppression resources will continue to prioritize the Lodin Fire.
Values at Risk: Private lands, cabins, and inholdings are located within one-quarter mile of the Lodin Fire and within one-half mile of the Spring Fire. Firefighters continue to prioritize protection of these values while working toward full containment of both incidents.
Safety: Heavy mixed-conifer fuel loading and numerous standing dead trees create hazardous working conditions for firefighters. The public is asked to avoid the area to allow firefighting personnel and equipment to operate safely.
Weather: Hot and dry conditions are expected to continue, with temperatures approaching 100°F and single-digit relative humidity under a persistent high-pressure system. These conditions may contribute to increased fire activity during the afternoon and evening hours.
Closures: There are no area closures at this time. Visitors are encouraged to avoid the vicinity of both fires and use caution when traveling near firefighting operations.
