It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Garrett John Printz Eckhart on July 17, 2026. Leaving all too soon, he was met by his Heavenly Father with a special set of wings for a special man.
A lifelong resident of Los Alamos, Garret was born on May 31, 1981 and grew to cherish the town and beautiful surroundings, bearing witness to it’s many changes over time. He was wildly curious about all things – most notably nature, history, science, and people – often researching rare subjects that piqued his interest through reading or discussion. “You learn something new every day” was his adage, often enthusiastically sharing his ideas and findings with others. Garrett loved to cook for loved ones, nurture his cherished garden, and create connections through memorable conversation.
Garrett’s personality was layered with kindness, intelligence, fascination, thoughtfulness, humor and uniqueness. He approached each pursuit with the same curiosity, care and appreciation that defined the way he lived.
He is survived by his mother Patricia Printz (Mark) Smith, father Douglas (Jeanne) Eckhart, son Landen Eckhart, and siblings Clayton (Denise) Smaine, Terra (John) Martinez, and Kelley (Ryan) Roesch as well as many other family members and countless friends.
A Celebration of Life will take place Friday, August 21 at Urban Park in Los Alamos between 11 am – 2 pm. A private family burial will occur at Guaje Pines Cemetery.
We take comfort in knowing God has welcomed Garrett lovingly and peacefully. Let us be reminded to meet each other with compassion instead of judgement, for we rarely know each other’s struggles. Kindness is a gift for both the giver and receiver, and a cornerstone of what will be truly missed about Garrett. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
