COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
The Betty Ehart Senior Center will temporarily close beginning August 3, 2026, to allow for a major renovation project approved by the Los Alamos County Council on June 30. The project is expected to take approximately eight months and will include installing a new HVAC system and improving accessibility through ADA upgrades.
While the building will close, currently provided services for older adults will continue through a community-based scatter-site model developed in partnership with Los Alamos County, Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization (LARSO), and other local organizations.
“Betty Ehart is more than a building,” said Ramón Garcia, Executive Director of LARSO. “It is the community of older adults and the people who serve them that make up the formula for positive living. The soul of this community is about building resilience, maintaining physical and emotional well-being, staying connected to one another, and creating the support networks that allow people to age in place.”
LARSO will continue providing congregate meals, home-delivered meals, transportation services, case management, Day Out, and its regular schedule of classes, wellness programs, educational activities, and social groups.
Temporary program locations will include the Family YMCA of Los Alamos, Los Alamos Assisted Living, Mesa Public Library, and Fuller Lodge, with program schedules and locations communicated directly to participants. These locations were secured through collaboration with Los Alamos County and community partners.
“The County’s support throughout this process is a testament to its commitment to the quality of life of Los Alamos residents,” Garcia says. “Thanks to that partnership, we are confident that services will continue with minimal disruption as the August 3 transition date approaches, and that our community will remain connected throughout the renovation. When older adults thrive, the collective well-being of Los Alamos is strengthened.”
The renovation project will improve comfort through a modern HVAC system, enhance accessibility and safety through ADA improvements, and ensure that Betty Ehart remains a welcoming place for future generations of older adults.
