DANCES OF INDIA NEWS RELEASE

The Los Alamos Dances of India group warmly invites the community to attend our performance at the International Folk Art Market (IFAM) in Santa Fe on July 10, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.

Dances of India brings together students and artists dedicated to sharing the rich cultural traditions of Indian dance. The core of the group is the students of the Los Alamos Family YMCA Kathak program.

Kathak, one of the major classical dance traditions of North India, combines intricate footwork, expressive storytelling, and rhythmic artistry. Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most celebrated classical dance forms of India, originating from the temples of Tamil Nadu, India. Both dances are a stunning visual synthesis of three key elements: Bhava (expression), Raga (melody), and Tala (rhythm).

Each year, Kathak instructor and performer Alina Deshpande choreographs and directs a special production that features Kathak students alongside guest artists representing other classical and folk dance traditions from across India. Proceeds from the performance support a global YMCA program.

This year’s presentation at the International Folk Art Market will showcase the classical dance forms of Kathak and Bharatanatyam, as well as a vibrant collection of folk dances from different regions of India. Audiences will experience the diversity, beauty, and energy of India’s cultural heritage through music, movement, and storytelling.
