Los Alamos County Remains In READY Status During Fire Season – Be Safe And Mindful Of Fire Restrictions This Holiday Weekend

COUNTY NEWS RELEASE

The Los Alamos County of Office of Emergency Management (OEM) would like to remind residents that Los Alamos County remains in the READY stage of the Ready, Set, Go! wildfire preparedness program throughout fire season. Heading into the holiday weekend, citizens are reminded to be mindful of the current fire restrictions and be safe as they celebrate.

McCauley Springs Fire Update

OEM continues to monitor the McCauley Springs Fire. Recent progress has significantly reduced the immediate threat to Los Alamos County. The fire is now 63% contained, Highway 4 has reopened to traffic with limited delays, evacuations have been lifted for nearby communities, and residents in areas adjacent to the fire are returning home. The fire remains active, and conditions can change quickly during fire season. Residents are encouraged to remain prepared.

“While the risk to Los Alamos County has decreased considerably over the past several days, wildfire season is far from over,” said Emergency Management officials. “Preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. Taking simple steps now helps protect your family and allows our community to respond more effectively should conditions change.”

Be READY every day

The READY stage means it is time to prepare before an emergency occurs. Los Alamos County encourages residents to:

  • Review family emergency and evacuation plans.
  • Prepare emergency supply kits for family members and pets.
  • Know multiple evacuation routes from your neighborhood.
  • Sign up for emergency notifications and monitor official County communication channels.
  • Stay informed about current wildfire conditions and weather forecasts.
  • Be prepared to act quickly should conditions change.

Firework Restrictions and Safety

Residents and visitors are also reminded that Stage 2 fire restrictions remain in effect. Under Stage 2, the ignition and use of fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices is prohibited. Everyone is expected to follow all local, state, and federal fire restrictions to help prevent new wildfires.

The community is encouraged to join the 4th of July Spectacular at White Rock Overlook for a safe place to celebrate the Semiquincentennial. When gathering with friends and family, here are some fun alternatives to fireworks that will keep everyone engaged and safe:

  • Use glow sticks. They glow in the dark and are a safe alternative to a sparkler.
  • Noise makers are sure to make a statement. They can be found at local party supply stores or make your own.
  • Outdoor movie night. Set up a screen and projector. Don’t forget the bug spray!
  • Red, white and blue silly string…fun for all ages!
  • Make a patriotic craft with the family.

Los Alamos County wishes the community a safe and happy 250th Independence Day. Visit the County Alerts and Current Conditions website for additional information. For current wildfire information, visit the NM Fire Info website.
