LWV NEWS RELEASE
Last autumn some members of the League of Women Voters (LWV) were inspired by Niki Johnson’s Pillars of Democracy artwork to produce a book of poems by League members. That idea reached fruition in Spring 2026 with the publication of Democracy’s Urgent Call: A Poetry Anthology by LWV Members.
Poets and members of the League of Women Voters recognize the power of language to connect people, to stir hearts and minds, and to reaffirm the enduring promise of democracy. They aim to illuminate democracy’s beauty, its fragility, and its strength, at a time when one cannot afford to take its core principles for granted. By lifting their voices together, they express their love of country and democracy.
The anthology Democracy’s Urgent Call features poems by League members from Hawaii to New Jersey, including a poem by Dorothy Dickmann (Central NM League) and one by JJ Mortensen (Los Alamos League). Copies are available for $15 with proceeds going to support the League’s work to protect and defend our democracy. For more information about the anthology or to order a copy, please email LWV Los Alamos at lwvla.jj@gmail.com.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. The League empowers voters and defends democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation, at the local, state, and national levels.
