CONSUELO’S PLACE NEWS RELEASE
Consuelo’s Place Homeless Shelter is proud to announce that it has officially received its 501(c)3 nonprofit designation from the Internal Revenue Service, and effective July 1, 2026, is operating as an independent nonprofit organization. This milestone marks a significant step forward in Consuelo’s Place’s mission to provide safe, dignified shelter and compassionate support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Santa Fe. As an independent nonprofit, Consuelo’s Place now has the ability to operate autonomously, apply for a broader range of grants, strengthen community partnerships, and accept tax-deductible donations directly in support of its work.
“This transition allows us to better serve our community and strengthen the long-term
sustainability of our shelter,” said Michele Williams, Executive Director of Consuelo’s Place.
“Becoming an independent nonprofit gives us the opportunity to grow strategically, improve our services, and continue building a trauma-informed, purpose-driven shelter for our most
vulnerable neighbors.”
The Board of Directors also formally recognizes Michele Williams, formerly Shelter Manager, as the organization’s Executive Director. Michele has been a dedicated leader and advocate for
residents, and her experience and vision will guide Consuelo’s Place through this important ne chapter.

As the organization looks toward the future, Consuelo’s Place is also beginning a fundraising campaign to support a new facility and support the daily operations of our shelter.
“Our vision is a shelter where every person is treated with dignity and has the support needed to move toward stability and permanent housing,” Williams said. “We invite the community to be part of that vision.”

We invite community members, partners, and supporters to visit Consuelo’s Place on July 1st from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. to celebrate this exciting milestone, tour the shelter, and join us in honoring the work and mission of our organization. Guests will also have the opportunity to join staff and clients during a community barbecue as we gather together in celebration and connection.
