| June 21, 2026 Update: Fire behavior became more active during the day as temperatures and winds increased and humidity dropped. Crews continue to provide structure protection, and more retardant drops have been ordered. The cause was determined to be lightning. No structures have been impacted, but multiple structures are still threatened. Jumano Trail has been moved to Set status from Go status. All other Deer Canyon residents will move to Ready status. The Deer Canyon Fire was discovered at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 in the Deer Canyon subdivision south of Mountainair. Currently, the lightning-caused fire is estimated to be 117 acreage and is 0% contained. Evacuations / Shelters: Jumano Trail has been moved to Set status from Go status. All other Deer Canyon residents will move to Ready status. A shelter has been established at 106 North Sunset, Mountainair. An animal shelter has been established at the Mountainair rodeo grounds, NM 107, Mountainair. Weather: Currently 99 degrees, 3% RH, west winds at 14 mph with gusts to 23 mph. Today, sunny, with a high near 93; west wind 10-15 mph. Tonight, clear with a low around 56; west wind 10-15 mph becoming light and variable. Acres: 117 estimated.
