RACHC NEWS RELEASE
The Rio Arriba Community Health Council (RACHC) has funded the installation of a permanent needle disposal unit at Espanola Pathways Shelter. In collaboration with The Mountain Center this new, permanent disposal unit provides a safe, accessible location for the disposal of used needles and other drug paraphernalia.
This collaboration creates a focus on supporting public health and community safety. The harm reduction initiative is more than the installation of a disposal unit; it is a shared commitment among local organizations to address substance use through practical, community-based solutions.
“This project is a tangible goal towards a bigger problem. To start building towards
greater visibility and provoke community responsibility reducing stigma.” said Jake Stockwell, Operations Director at the Shelter.
While a permanent needle disposal unit addresses an immediate need, partners emphasize that it is also part of a broader vision. The permanent installation contributes to increasing the visibility of harm reduction strategies, encouraging community dialogue, reducing stigma associated with substance use, and collective responsibility.
By working together, Rio Arriba Community Health Council, Española Pathways
Shelter, and The Mountain Center are demonstrating the value of partnership in
creating a healthier and safer environment for their surrounding community.
