J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee Announces 24 Scholarship Recipients For 2026

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee (JROMC) has announced the 24 winners of this year’s scholarship awards for Los Alamos and regional high school seniors.

The 2026 LAHS scholarship recipients are:

Los Alamos High School

Helena Welch: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded to one student for outstanding promise in science and mathematics.

Madalyn Baily: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Satch Cowan, funded by the Delle Foundation, is awarded to a student with an excellent academic record and outstanding promise in science or medicine.

John Kang and Alyssa Sun: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Nicholas C. Metropolis, funded privately, is awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding promise in the mathematical sciences.

Irina Maiorov: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of J. Arthur and Nancy Laubach Freed, funded privately, is awarded to one student for outstanding academic achievements.

James Ito: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Richard C. Swenson, funded privately, is awarded to a student with outstanding academic achievements and exceptional promise in physics or mathematical sciences.

Matthea Fung: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Leon and Rosalie Heller, funded privately, is awarded to one student with an excellent academic record who has demonstrated a significant interest in classical music.

Sara Khan: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Ron and Sally Wilkins, funded privately, is awarded to one student for academic excellence and creativity.

Calvin Marksteiner: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by the New Mexico Consortium, is awarded to one student who shows exceptional promise of future contributions to society and plans to attend a New Mexico school of higher education.

Penelope Barry-Hoffman, Cara Gauss, August Ovaska:
The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded for outstanding academic achievements.

Capital High School

Mariah Chavez: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded to students who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, or computer science.

Abraham Duran Carrillo: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, in honor of Mary Lou and Michael Williams, is awarded to a student from a regional high school who demonstrates exceptional promise of future contributions to society.

Emily Trevizo: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by the New Mexico Consortium, is awarded to a student who shows exceptional promise of future contributions to society and plans to attend a New Mexico school of higher education.

Osmel Pacheco: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Ron and Sally Wilkins, funded privately, is awarded to a student for academic excellence and creativity.

Pojoaque Valley High School


Ava Avalos: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Houston T. (Terry) Hawkins, funded privately, is awarded for demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the physical or life sciences, mathematics, or computer science, and exceptional promise of future contributions to society.

Destiney Montoya: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded to students who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, or computer science.

Santa Fe High School


Alexa Paige Tomkins: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Satch Cowan, funded by the Delle Foundation, is awarded to a student with an excellent academic record and outstanding promise in science or medicine.

Kimberly Corona-Rivera:
The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded to students who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, or computer science.

Santa Fe Indian School

Raeann Chavez: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Nicholas C. Metropolis, funded privately, is awarded to a student who demonstrates outstanding promise in the mathematical sciences.

Kyla Trujillo: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, in honor of Richard and Barbara Daly, funded privately, is awarded to a student who shows exceptional promise in science, engineering, mathematics, arts, or history.

Jemez Valley High School


Kenn Dejan: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded to students who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics, or computer science.

Española Valley High School

Kiara Salinas Ontiveros: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Nicholas C. Metropolis, funded privately, is awarded to a student who demonstrates outstanding promise in the mathematical sciences.

These 24 scholarships were awarded to high school seniors who, in the spirit of excellence and open inquiry exemplified by Oppenheimer, have shown exceptional promise in the sciences and arts. The 2026 scholarship recipients will be recognized at a banquet prior to the 53rd Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture by Professor Dante Lauretta on Monday, June 22, at 7:00 p.m. at the Duane Smith Auditorium in Los Alamos.

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee is a nonprofit organization that honors Oppenheimer’s legacy through public lectures by distinguished speakers, scholarships for high school students, and science-education outreach in Northern New Mexico. Since 1984, the JROMC has awarded more than 352 scholarships totaling more than $942,500.
