ATOMIC CITY QUILTS NEWS RELEASE

Two years ago, Atomic City Quilts put out a request for new partners, or risk shutting down. We again face a cross-roads and are in need of help to remain open. Atomic City Quilts is more than just a store—it’s a vibrant, welcoming hub for quilters, cross-stitchers, and leather newbies. Whether you’re making matching fabric selections, doing cross- stitch, wanting to join a sewing lesson, or just soaking in the warm, creative atmosphere, it’s a gem in Los Alamos that celebrates both artistic craft and community spirit.

Atomic City Quilts in Los Alamos, New Mexico, is a delightful, locally-owned quilt and fiber-art supply shop that blends modern creativity and community with a dash of science. We are in need of new partners, especially people to run the day-to-day operations of the business.

ACQ’s future is strong. We have just participated in the 1st All Arizona & New Mexico Shop Hop in which we had a record number of visitors and sales. We had quilters from everywhere
between Missouri, to Colorado, to Texas, to the far side of Arizona visit our small shop here in Northern New Mexico. It was a blessing to see the diversity of women, men, and children passionate about Quilting!

Further, as promised two years ago, ACQ has expanded into needlework and specialty threads. We thank the EGA folks who have come in to buy floss and cloth! We picked up a couple of new fabric lines over the last year and a half. We also sponsor instructors who have presented unique classes, and specialists to help you finish your masterpieces.

However, the future of ACQ is in the balance. Part of the agreement to keep our store open was for additional investment and retail management to help out. To that end, James, Moira, and friends, have stepped forward to expand ACQ into a true multi-partner partnership and run the shop. Unfortunately, the retail manager that did step forward had her life call her away from Los Alamos, and as we wished her well on her journey, Shelly graciously stepped forward to again take on the day-to-day management of the business to keep the dream alive. Shelly has had significant help from family and friends to “cover the shop”, but she does need to reduce her role in the business to pursue other dreams that are on her heart.

As such, ACQ is in need of entrepreneurial community-oriented fiber enthusiasts to step forward to continue to move our neighborhood quilt store forward. As before, the need is for dedicated individuals to run the retail aspects of the business. Specifically, having the shop open on the Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday schedule. Both James and Moira love serving when we are in, however we can not cover the hours that are necessary to have a successful business.

An information meeting will be held on Tuesday June 16, 6:30 p.m. at the shop located at 1362 Trinity, Suite C, in Los Alamos. We will be making our next decision by the end of June. So if you have been thinking about how best to keep your local fabric shop local, and satisfy your entrepreneurial spirit, please contact James or Shelly at james.j.kuropatwinski@gmail.com.
