COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
The County Sustainability Office, in partnership with Public Works, is excited to announce that two, new direct-current fast-charging stations are coming to Mesa Public Library. This is the next step in expanding the community’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
Resuming June 8, 2026, the main vehicle access route and parking lot will be closed until paving activities are completed (by June 30). Community members visiting the library can use the parking lots on the east side of the library near Fuller Lodge. Community members returning books can park on the east side of library and walk the books into the drop-off bin.
The project accelerates the County’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles. The installation of these charging stations supports the County’s Climate Action Plan, adopted by the Los Alamos County Council in November 2024, with the key objectives of expanding the EV charging network, reducing GHG emissions from local fleets, and encouraging more residents to make the shift to electric vehicles. The County aims to achieve a 30% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030, 80% by 2040, and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
R&M Construction, LLC has been awarded the contract for this project and will be installing the power supply systems, support pads for the chargers, bollards to protect the equipment, and providing an emergency power shut-off mechanism.
Construction activities will be coordinated around equipment delivery schedules. The electrical panel has been ordered, and some project activities may occur in phases while equipment is received. Overall construction schedule remains dependent on equipment delivery timelines; however, the project is expected to be substantially complete by October 2026.
This project is partially funded through a $435,588 grant award by the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
In addition to serving public and County fleet vehicles, the new charging stations will be accessible to the broader community. A fee of $0.58/kWh will apply for public use of the chargers, helping to offset the operational costs of the new infrastructure.
The EV charger installation also aligns with Los Alamos County’s strategic goals of effective, efficient, and reliable services; natural resource protection; and carbon-neutral energy supply. By diversifying its energy sources and expanding the EV charging network, the County is reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable and energy-efficient future for the community.
