The New Mexico State Police is providing an update in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Melissa Casias.

On May 28, 2026, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was notified that a hiker had discovered human remains in the McGaffey Ridge area of the Carson National Forest. Investigators also learned that a handgun was located alongside the remains.

Through coordination with the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI), the individual has been positively identified as missing person, Melissa Casias.

The cause and manner of death have not yet been determined. The remains will undergo further anthropological examination by OMI.

On June 26, 2025, Melissa Casias was reported missing after she failed to arrive at work and did not return home that evening after visiting her daughter at work. Family later discovered that her personal belongings, including her purse, identification, and cell phones had been left behind, prompting concern for her welfare and a missing person investigation.

Since that time, the New Mexico State Police has conducted an extensive investigation, which remains active and ongoing.

The New Mexico State Police extend their deepest condolences to the Casias and Mondragon families during this difficult time.
