ST. BALDRICK’S NEWS RELEASE
Organizers of this year’s Los Alamos St. Baldrick’s children’s cancer event are issuing a heartfelt—and slightly panicked—call to action to local businesses, churches, social groups, and community members to join the 2026 St. Baldrick’s Brave the Shave fundraiser. An ALL ages head shave (or blast) event.
St. Baldrick’s events across the country bring together first responders and everyday neighbors to fund critical research and support for families facing childhood cancer. If you’re new to St. Baldrick’s, you can learn more at www.stbaldricks.org. The tradition of fire departments, police, and community teams lining up to lose their hair has become a powerful symbol: kids with cancer often don’t get to choose when they lose theirs, so community members step up, shave up, and raise money in solidarity.
“Children’s cancer is a leading cause of death among kids,” organizers note. “First responders in our community are often the first ones there when a family receives the worst news of their lives, but we need the whole community to stand beside them.”
A regional event that needs local teams
This year, Los Alamos is hosting the regional St. Baldrick’s “Brave the Shave” event, and organizers say the need for teams is urgent. The campaign’s success depends on broad participation from workplaces, faith communities, service clubs, sports teams, and friend groups that can rally their networks, raise funds, and show up big on event day.
“We know there are brave hearts (and brave scalps) all over this town,” organizers say. “Now we just need them on the sign‑up sheet.”
How groups can get involved
Organizers are inviting:
- Work teams, church groups, clubs, school groups, and friend groups to form fundraising teams and challenge one another to participate.
- Participants to choose between:
- Shaving their heads, or
- Taking on the new LAFD fire hose blast: for those who prefer to keep their hair but don’t mind being power‑washed in public.
Teams are encouraged to use their social networks, email lists, and word of mouth to collect donations in the weeks leading up to the event. Signing up now is key: the earlier teams register, the more time they have to fundraise toward July’s goal.
“Everyone knows at least one person who would pay good money to see them bald or blasted with a fire hose,” organizers joke. “Start making your list.”
Participation directly funds life‑saving pediatric cancer research and support services for children and families in treatment.

Why this matters

- Involving local businesses, churches, clubs, and social groups expands the reach and impact across Los Alamos and the surrounding region.
- It gives kids and families in treatment a visible reminder that this community is willing to stand with them, quite literally, in the barber’s chair.

Organizers Becca and Tylerr Jones and Jillian and David Sarnowski invite outreach from across the community. “We are all blessed that our kids are healthy,” they share. “If they weren’t, we would hope others would rally around us. That’s why we do this, for the families who don’t get to take good health for granted.”
Current partners include Los Alamos Fire Department, Bathtub Row Brewing Co‑op, and EXIT Realty Advantage NM, with additional sponsors and vendors encouraged to join.

Los Alamos has never been shy about showing up for a good cause. This July, organizers are hoping the community will once again prove that when it comes to kids with cancer, we’re all in this, hair, hoses, and all.
