Obituary: Richard A. Grimes Feb. 7, 1946 – May, 19, 2026

Richard A. Grimes, known lovingly to all as Rick (and Ricky), passed away on May 19, 2026, at his home in Littleton, Colorado following a battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 80 years old.

Rick was born on February 7, 1946, in Covington, Kentucky, but grew up in Long Beach, CA, until moving to Oregon following high school. In Oregon, Rick served his country honorably in the National Guard, and obtained at Bachelor of Arts and master’s degree in education from the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!). He also lived in Hong Kong for three years in his early 30s, but ultimately lived most of his life in northern New Mexico (Los Alamos and Santa Fe). New Mexico was his “home”.

Rick dedicated 35 years to shaping young minds as both a teacher and a principal around the world (Oregon, inner city of Chicago, Hong Kong, New Mexico, and San Diego, CA). His career in education was not simply a profession; it was a calling. He believed deeply in the transformative power of learning and gave generously of his time, wisdom, and heart to the students and colleagues he served.

Rick’s adventurous spirit and love for traveling brought him to every continent on the globe, forging lifelong friendships in every corner of the world. He had a magnetic personality and effortlessly brought joy to every room he entered. His charm, humor, and genuine kindness drew people to him, and his loyalty ensured they stayed close for a lifetime.

Beyond his professional achievements and travels, Rick was defined by his generosity and his deep love for family and friends. He was an immensely proud father and grandfather, and his devotion to those he loved was unwavering. His passions for music, golf, and good company filled his days with laughter and connection. He was also a dedicated member of the NM Men’s Wellness Group where deep friendships grew over 40 years, and he volunteered with “Children First,” extending his lifelong commitment to the well-being of children and communities.

Rick is survived by his sons, Chris and Tim, and grandchildren, Cora, Oliver, and Harrison. He also leaves behind a wide circle of cherished friends, colleagues, and former students whose lives he touched in immeasurable ways.

Those who knew Rick best will remember his infectious laughter, his open heart, and his extraordinary ability to make everyone around him feel valued and welcomed. He lived a life rich in purpose, adventure, and love. His family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace, and his legacy of kindness, generosity, and dedication to others will endure in the countless lives he changed for the better.

A celebration of Rick’s life will be planned in Santa Fe, New Mexico, later in the summer.
Details will be shared with family and friends as arrangements are finalized.
